Dinesh DebbarmaBorn in 1920 at Maharani, then a most backward tribal village of Kamalpur Sub-Division, Comrade Dinesh Debbarma plunged into Janashiksha movement initiated by late Comrade Dasaratha Deb, (Movement of universal education) during king’s regime. He was one of the founder members of the Tripura Rajya Upajati Ganamukti Parishad in 1948. He attained membership of undivided communist party in 1950. As he had played a spectacular role in the hills in advancement of democratic movement uniting the tribals and nontribals, naturally, he invited wrath of the then ruling circles, who detained him 33 months in two terms. He had to go underground for more than six years to avoid further detention. He played a vital role in formation of party in Kamalpur and at the same time expansion of GMP organisation all over the state in sixties. He was a vanguard in the movement for protecting democratic right of the people, preserving ethnic entity of the tribal communities and for proper rehabilitation of the lakhs of refugees migrated from erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He was the State Council Member of the undivided communist party since its formation in the state. In the struggle against distortion of Marxism, he sided with the CPI(M) in 1964. Here also he was State Committee Member from the day of its inception till his death. In 1982 he was ascended to the party State Secretariat where he successfully discharged his responsibility till 2003. For a long period, he was Vice President of Tripura Rajya Upajati Ganamukti Parishad. Since 1998, he was elected as President of this organisation and continued for five years.

 

          Comrade Dinesh Debbarma was elected in the Assembly for three terms in 1978, 1983 and 1988. He was Minister in two terms in 1978 and 1983. Due to his able guidance as Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development Department during first Left Front Government, first ever Panchayat elections in secret ballot could be held in the state. Also he had important role in formation of long aspired Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council in the state.
